1. Appearance –

Plastic comb is very old fashioned looking and the large plastic spine is not very attractive. If you want it to look like a professional then I would recommend the new thermal binding machine.

2. Ease of use –

Any binder, in which you have to punch holes in your document, is going to be hard to bind. If you do not line up each page exactly right, you will have to re-print and re-bind till you get it right. The thermal binder is much easier to use, as all you do is insert the pages in the binding cover.

3. Speed –

Any binder that you have to punch holes in paper before you bind will be slow. This leaves the thermal binder as the fastest machine.

4. Cost effective –

With the plastic comb and wire binders, you have to purchase 3 separate components – the front cover, the spine and the back cover. The wire spine in particular is very expensive. However, even higher is the labour cost to bind using the plastic and wire systems. When you compare it to the new thermal binding machine, all you do is to place your document into a one piece cover and insert it into the binder. The new thermal binder is very cost effective. 5. Strength –

The biggest fear with a bound document is whether the pages will fall out. This is particularly so with the plastic comb method as each page has holes punched in it, making it easy to tear or come apart. The wire has smaller holes, but can still come apart. With the new thermal binder, there are no holes punched in the paper and the whole document is bound securely.

6. Pages lie flat when opened –

The plastic comb and wire bound documents can lie flat by feeding the pages across the spine from right to left till you get to the page you want. The thermal binder is similar to a book so you just open it to the page you want and run your hand over the spine.

7. Adding and removing pages –

This is one of the most important features as often when a document is bound, something changes and one or more pages need updating. By far the easiest way to do this is to use the thermal binder as you do not have to take the document apart, instead simply put the document back in the binder, pull out the wrong pages and insert the new pages. It’s that easy. It is just too hard with the plastic comb binder and virtually impossible with the wire binder.
